Conestoga Public Schools' Innovative Approach to Data and Assessment

Conestoga Public Schools’ Innovative Approach to Data and Assessment

Handling student data effectively can be a big challenge for many schools. Disconnected data systems, time-consuming data gathering, and lack of accessible insights often hinder educators from making informed decisions. Conestoga Public Schools in southeast Nebraska faced these exact challenges. However, with the help of a centralized data solution, they have significantly improved their data management and assessment practices. At our Otus Regional Workshop in Papillion, Nebraska, we sat down with Megan Glazebrook, an elementary instructional coach for Conestoga. Megan shared how Otus has enhanced data accessibility, how they secured stakeholder buy-in to adopt and implement the new platform, and how they are supporting students through it.

Three Ways Data Supports High-Quality Teaching and Learning at Conestoga

Simplifying Data Management

Conestoga was searching for a way to manage the vast amount of student data they were gathering across the district. Compiling and analyzing data was cumbersome and often led to fragmented insights, making it difficult for educators to get a complete picture of student performance. The need for a streamlined, centralized system was clear. With Otus, educators can now easily access and manipulate data, which not only saves time but also allows for more meaningful discussions about student progress. This centralized approach has provided teachers with the tools they need to make data-driven decisions that can positively impact student outcomes.

“We were looking for a place to house all the data district-wide. We’re a smaller district, but still have a ton of data. So to have that solid, concise, one-place spot for all of our data was what we were looking for.”

Securing Teacher Buy-In and a Smooth Implementation

Introducing new technology can often be met with resistance—and understandably so. Teachers may be apprehensive about the learning curve, potential disruptions to their established routines, and the time required to integrate a new system. However, Conestoga’s approach to implementing Otus was remarkably smooth thanks to its gradual adoption strategy and support from key staff members. This thoughtful approach led to a natural buy-in from teachers. As more educators experienced the benefits of Otus, the enthusiasm for the new platform grew.

“As a district, we were really allowed to dive in as we wanted. The more people have tried it, the more that we’ve worked with Otus. Our Otus representative has been phenomenal to work with. It’s made everything possible. I feel like all of our buy-in has just snowballed as we’ve learned that really whatever we want, Otus can do one way or another for us, which has really helped.”

Streamlining Assessment and Student Support

One of the Otus features Conestoga has found most useful is its ability to streamline assessments and student support processes. Teachers appreciate how seamlessly assessments integrate with grade books and how easily this information is accessible to families. Additionally, using Otus to meet the new reading law requirements in Nebraska, specifically for Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIPs) for K-3 students, will improve efficiency and accessibility.

Looking Ahead: Continuous Improvement and Positive Recognition

As Conestoga moves forward, the focus remains on utilizing data to drive instructional strategies and support students. Continuous improvement in PLCs, particularly in discussing standards and student behavior, is top of mind. The integration of positive behavior recognition within Otus is also a priority, aiming to enhance the overall school climate.

Reflecting on her school, Megan shared, “Being in a small school, raising my boys in a small school, we’re all here for all of our kids, and that’s been my favorite thing about Conestoga.” Thanks to educators like Megan, this close-knit community, combined with a strong, data-driven approach, ensures that every student receives the support they need.
