Engineering Manager

We are looking for a talented, highly motivated, hands-on Engineering Manager to help bring the best possible software solutions to educators.

As an Engineering Manager, you will have the opportunity to immediately contribute and see results of your work in use by students, teachers, parents and district administrators across the country. This position reports to our CTO in our downtown Chicago office.

  • You will work with our software engineers, as well as designers and product managers in the design and implementation of applications being used by students, teachers and district administrators in school districts across the United States.
  • Lead a team of software engineers in the transition from a monolithic application to microservices, across multiple product verticals.
  • Manage as well as mentor software engineers.
  • Own the creation and maintenance of software development processes and standards.
  • Monitor the work of direct reports and providing ongoing feedback
  • Work with HR/Recruiting colleagues to recruit and retain great software engineers and staff.


  • BS/BA degree or equivalent experience.
  • You have at least 7 years of hands-on experience as a Software Engineer across multiple environments on complex, distributed, polyglot web applications.
  • You have at least 3 years of software engineering management experience leading a team of 5+ people working on a distributed system.
  • Proven experience mentoring, motivating, and leading a team through successful software projects.
  • You have experience managing teams running platforms on public Cloud environments (AWS preferred). You understand the Operations side of things and get that DevOps is a philosophy, not a title.
  • Expertise in application, data, and infrastructure architecture disciplines.
  • Working experience utilizing Microservice Architecture.
  • Experience working on Agile teams leveraging test-driven development, pair programming, and CI/CD.
  • Knowledge of industry technology strategies and best practices.
  • Working experience with Node.js, Angular, Java or similar.
  • Working experience with RDBS or NoSql database technologies.
